【意會英文】It's a pity. / It's a shame.

「意會英文」系列記錄困擾我的英語用法，以及自己頓悟（？）的過程。

以前聽到「It's a shame.」總是會覺得很緊張，很像自己被罵了一樣。因為「shame」會讓我想到「Shame on you!」這個用法， 不管是吵架時要出大招時用，還是看到讓人憤怒的事情時脫口而出，情境都會讓人很緊張。

至於「It's a pity.」就比較好理解，就是字面上「很可惜」的意思。儘管如此，這句話對我來說也是屬於「每個字我都看得懂，卻不確定怎麼用」的範疇。

直到最近，才終於有那麼一點點體會到這兩句話的用法。

其實這兩句話是互通的。至於箇中意思， 還是老話一句要靠上下文判斷，大致上可以分為「好可悲」跟「好可惜」兩種。

好可悲

比較接近我原始對於「shame」的理解，偏向負面的用法，不過沒有潑婦罵街的形象，比較接近苦口婆心般呼籲。

這樣的用法是我在一名印度裔英國人 Mihir Bose 在衛報發表的社論： I came to Britain from India, fulfilled a dream, and I say this: we’re a great country, but a work in progress 看到的。

社論裡面提到作者剛到英國時，遭遇到的歧視困境，以及英國對於多元種族的態度的現況。在文章的最後，指出了英國從 1969 年以來已經進步很多了，但還有很多地方要改善。

When defenders of the empire talk of the past being nuanced, they cherrypick the parts that show Britain in the best light.

They conceal or find excuses for the horrific acts.

But unless they stop editing the past, how can we become a truly multicultural nation, with people of different colours and creeds understanding where we have all come from?

Those who argue they are defending this country with tall tales and tired narratives actually do it a disservice.

They stop us becoming our future selves – an aware, mature, self-confident country.

Given how far Britain has progressed since 1969, and how far it could go, that’s a pity.

節錄的這段是在文章的最後，因此「that's a pity」呼籲比起嘆氣般的「好可惜」，意思傳達上比較像多了一絲悲壯的「好可悲」。

好可惜

比較常用的是這個意思，基本上可以當做口頭禪在用了。跟英國人對話時還滿常聽到他們隨口就一句「It's a pity」。

賣的東西沒了、給的東西少了、地鐵關閉了，全部都可以用！

當了解到有這層意思後，「It's a pity.」也變成了我的口頭禪了。

這大概是所謂的「語言要在環境裡學習」的意思吧？
